Photo Monday – Apple Picking

Apple picking.  I feel like I missed out on the best of fall if I don’t go.

Now that we live in Brooklyn, we figured we’d find an orchard in Long Island.  Brooklyn is already on the island itself so it’s got to be closer, right? Ha! A quick search revealed that the orchards are mostly at the eastern end.  Brooklyn is at the western end.  And the island’s name is well earned…

M found a small one that was only an hour away so we went there.  It was teeny tiny.  The trees are so small, they almost look like vines. The girls could pick apples themselves at least…

I don’t particularly enjoy the big operation orchards.  You know, the ones that have a corn maze and charge an entry fee.  But this one was a little smaller than I like.  I want real trees! The one we used to go to in Westchester also had a small market where you could get cider and donuts. It felt like a place where you could hang out a bit, not just pick apples.  Still, we had fun.

And now, what are we going to do with all these apples? Any favorite recipes?  (We usually end up with pies, apples bread, apple crisp, muffins, and lots of good old crunching down.)

Oh, I wish I could go apple-picking! There isn’t much in the way of pick-it-yourself places around here, except a pumpkin patch that is way too busy to be fun. I love to make apple butter in the fall, but I don’t have a recipe exactly… it’s mostly just apples with a little bit of sugar, lemon, cinnamon, and nutmeg.

  2. Aww this makes me miss the east coast! There is a small orchard close to where I grew up in NJ, they do apples and peaches at their respective seasons, plus they have all the indulgent goodies inside like cider, donuts and potato latkes! (I’m not sure if Texans even know what latkes are and I miss them) We would just apple pie it UP afterwards, but my sister and I found a pretty darn delicious recipe for a pie that called for sour cream, which was amazing..
