Summer Maxi

May and June didn’t see me sew much for souricette 1.  She noticed.  She also noticed me testing a pattern for a women’s maxi skirt.

Souricette 1 loves maxi skirts and dresses.  I think it appeals to the princess in her…

And I just happened to have the Heidi&Finn Summer Maxi Dress pattern.

So I had her go through my stash to pick a fabric and I rushed to get this dress done before we left.

Great fabric choice, don’t you think?  It’s what I would have chosen too.  The large scale print really works with the skirt.

I made a size 6 and noticed after having done the main seams that it was going to be too big.  I wish the shop had a sizing chart.  You get the finished measurements in the pattern but there’s no mention of the design and wearing ease.  And no sizing chart.  Makes it hard to pick the right size, doesn’t it?  Anyway, seeing that, I knew that having the tie at the back wouldn’t work.  This kind of dress shouldn’t have any looseness in the chest. So I put in a button instead.  I was going to tie the straps around her neck halter style but I noticed the back kept falling a little.  Enough for me to know that it was held up only by the straps.  The dress just wasn’t snug enough in the chest.  I ended up adding two little buttonholes at the back.  I thread the straps through them and then tie in a bow.  Like this.

It isn’t the most elegant solution (see how offset the button is?) but it works.  Souricette 1 loves it but I know she would really like halter straps…  I’m thinking that I could keep the same size but add shirring to the back.  That might get me the tighter fit that we would need.  I’m thinking souricette 1 will be getting a second maxi dress before Summer is over…

Creative mommy at home to two wonderful little girls, trying to juggle family, sewing, exercise, family, knitting, photography, and did I mention family?
