And She’s Five!

And she’s still sunshine but she has kicked my butt this year! (Her father’s too.)

There were times when I had no clue how to work with little miss V.  I would try to have chats with her about whatever the conflict of the day was but she was having none of it.  She wants what she wants when she wants it and that’s it.  No amount of reasoning worked.  Not listening and repeating her words to show I had understood her.  Not negotiation.  Nothing. I lost patience more times than I care to admit.  I would go off and do something else and feel guilty.  As soon as I’d calmed down, I would go to her and hug her.  She might be over it already or she might be crying.  But she almost always accepted the hug and returned it.  She would then manage to express her feelings without screaming but she would also accept my decision.  And we would talk.  It’s like she needs to explode before she can move on.  Like one of those hot summer days that turn into a short lived but epic thunderstorm before the sun comes out again. That smile!

In the midst of all this, I noticed something about her.  She isn’t possessive at all.  She will want another child’s toy and try to get it.  She will take her sister’s lego pieces to make something.  But then, she will freely lend her own toys.  She will give part of her dessert.  She’s given me some of her money! (I sneaked it back into her purse.) Sweet rainbow child…

So she is.  Making me laugh and making me sigh. Simultaneously charming me with her banter and exhausting me with the endless noise.  Exasperating me with her stubborn independence and surprising me with her abilities and strength.  And stamina! This kid walked 10km several times when we traveled and did it again just yesterday. 10km on little legs. No wonder she wears through her shoes in record time…

And so she’s growing up.  Ready and excited for kindergarten in September…

Creative mommy at home to two wonderful little girls, trying to juggle family, sewing, exercise, family, knitting, photography, and did I mention family?

She’s just adorable! I’ve got one who turns into a little thundercloud regularly too… but aren’t they incredible when they are happy? 😉
