Photo Monday – Playing With my New Lens

For the third year in a row, I asked for a lens as my birthday-Christmas-from everybody gift.  Last year, I really thought that I would be looking into flashes as this year’s gift.  I changed my mind in Scotland.  When we were there, I frequently took the same picture with my camera and my phone.  I loved the depth in the phone pictures and realized it was due to it having a much wider angle.

M and the girls gave me my lens Saturday morning and I took it out for a spin in the afternoon.  The past two lenses I picked were prime lenses, i.e. no zoom. I have to move in order to zoom in or out.  This one has a zoom though.  It goes from 17mm to 40mm (the smaller the number, the wider the angle).

All pictures were taken in Prospect Park. I tried a bunch of different things.  I know wide angle lenses are often used for landscapes so I tried that but I’m always curious to see what else I can do.

Yes, I will sometimes shoot landscapes with a portrait orientation.  Deal with it.

I couldn’t pick my favorite of the two tunnel pictures. I’m drawn to the close up details but the other one does a better job of showing that depth I was talking about.

This may sound weird but one of the reasons I wanted a wide angle lens was to take pictures of whole trees from up close. (I had a beast of a time getting the color right on both the sky and leaves.)

And of course, I had to try close ups.

And now, I can’t wait to see what I can do in the city…
