The girls had the week off last week so we went… North. Isn’t that what everyone does in Winter? Seriously though, M had some business to attend to in Canada so we figured we’d take a few days, see family, and maybe get a few days of real Winter weather. It was more like 24 hours of Winter weather but I’ll take it. After all, last year, we didn’t even get to go skating. Definitely an improvement.
We took the girls to Rideau Canal and thought we’d just do what we could. They might have gotten sick of it after 5 minutes.
We got on at the 0.8km marker and made it all the way to the Dow’s Lake pavilion (6.3 km marker). Pause for a snack and then back. 11 kilometers total. Almost 7 miles. I did not think V could skate that long. She did it. She was brave and kept going when it got harder (it warmed up and the ice got a bit soft). She’s a tough kid.
After that day, M and I left the girls with my family and went to Château Montebello. We managed to get some cross country skiing in on the first afternoon but then, it rained. We went curling and swimming instead. I still went out when my weather app said the rain had stopped. It hadn’t. There was a drizzle that slowly turned to true rain as I walked. I soldiered on and came back to the hotel rather wet.
Good thing they have those lovely fireplaces in the lobby…
Oh, how fun! I’ve only ever skated on a rink… I’d love to go on a canal someday! Love the last photo!

I grew up skating on that canal every Winter! And eating Beaver Tails (it’s a pastry, not an actual beaver’s tail). There are a few places that create ice paths in the forrest as well. I want to try that! The advantage of the ice paths and canal is that you aren’t just skating around in a circle.

That’s what I was thinking- you actually get to GO someplace. An ice path through the forest sounds even more fun! I’ve seen a few pictures of Beaver Tails- they look delicious!
