Coconut Frog Mask

We went to Puerto Rico last Summer and our first few days were spent in old San Juan. We walked by this tourist shop that had those vejigante masks. It was closed but I spotted one that was different from the others. We went back when the shop was open and I just stared at it. They were expensive so we left but I couldn’t stop thinking about it. So we went back. Even with a mask covering half my face, the salesperson could tell I loved it. So we bought it. It hangs in the living room now and gives me joy each time I look at it. I mean look at it!

It’s like a happy little sunburst frog! The whole thing is coconut. The head is the coconut shell and the spokes and legs are these little branch things that grow next to the coconuts on the tree. The artist then painted it with tons of detail, kind of like a Klimt painting. I thought it would make a good subject to compare pictures taken with my 100mm macro lens with and without the extension tube. I got as close as I could with each one. And there are a couple good comparison shots. The angles are different but you can still see how much closer I can get with the tube.

With extension tube and pretending the dust isn’t visible. I only saw it once I started editing or I would have wiped it off. This is magnified quite a bit and I swear it doesn’t show in real life!

Creative mommy at home to two wonderful little girls, trying to juggle family, sewing, exercise, family, knitting, photography, and did I mention family?
